Evonik’s Strong Educational Ties in Lockland
Thanks to Joe Won and Evonik’s Lockland plant, high school senior Sierra Schotton knows about free enterprise.
Sierra, who is Lockland High School Student Council president as well as a member of the National Honor Society, was one of four students Evonik Degussa Corporation sponsored to attend the local Rotary Club’s Camp Enterprise, a three-day event devoted to business and economics.
“We learned about the stock market and how businesses work,” says Sierra, who will attend the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati after graduation in June. “We also met people from different schools and backgrounds and learned how to get along with each other. It was fantastic.”
Sponsoring students for Camp Enterprise is but one of the numerous activities Evonik is involved in at Lockland schools, says Donna Hubbard, Superintendent of schools.
“Evonik and Joe are absolutely the best neighbors we could have, and in this part of the country, that says it all,” adds Donna. ”Joe and the others at the plant take an interest in the school and our students. They provide scholarships and show a genuine concern in their well being.”
Not only that, adds High School Principal Ben Hubbard, but Evonik also invites classes to the plant for tours to see how colorants are made. “A lot of our students don’t know what manufacturing is, and Joe lets them see it first hand,” says Ben. “You can talk about careers in science and chemistry, but Evonik actually takes the time to show our students what a career in chemistry is actually like.”
Brenda Barrett, an English teacher at Lockland who also advises the National Honor Society, puts it another way: “Evonik is always there when we need them. The students here very much appreciate what they do for them. And so do we.”
