Alphabetic Principle

Alphabetic principle is understanding that words are composed of letters that represent sounds and being able to use the relationships between letters and sounds to pronounce and spell words. Some examples of activities illustrating the alphabetic principle include:

  • Letter/Sound associations
  • Blending sounds to make words
  • Segmenting sounds in words
  • Reading nonsense words
