Former Cincinnati Bengal Sam Hubbard helped make the first week of school a memorable one at Lockland Schools, but his connection to Lockland students extends well beyond a special back-to-school visit.

Through the Sam Hubbard Foundation's Hubbard's Cupboard program, Lockland students have access to school supplies, hygiene products, snacks and other everyday essentials they may need throughout the school day. Mr. Hubbard visited Lockland this week to help restock the school's cupboard and greet students as they returned for a new school year.

For Lockland Director of Student Wellness Jenny Bole, the value of Hubbard’s Cupboard can be found in moments that often happen quietly and behind the scenes.

"It truly is such a difference-maker for our kids because they know when they come in the building, they're taken care of," Bole told FOX19.

Just as importantly, the resource is available in a way that helps remove the embarrassment students might otherwise feel about asking for something they need. It might be a snack that helps a student get through the afternoon, deodorant before gym class, feminine hygiene products or a school supply needed for class.

While those things may seem small, Bole said their impact can be significant.

"I think we often think of life-changing as something big and dramatic," she said. "But for us, those moments are so much quieter."

Now in its fourth year, Hubbard's Cupboard has provided more than $1 million in essential supplies to area students. The program, which partners with Crayons and Beyond, is expanding from 36 schools last year to 40 schools this school year, with a goal of reaching 70 schools by 2030.

Hubbard's visit to Lockland also came with one more surprise for students. On the first day of school, his voice came over the morning announcements with a special message welcoming students back and wishing them a great school year.

For Lockland Schools, Hubbard's Cupboard is more than a collection of supplies. It's another way to make sure students have what they need to feel comfortable, confident and ready to learn each day.
